Our Mission

Aquidneck Island Earth Week partners aim to inspire and empower Aquidneck Islanders to support a healthier and more sustainable environment. We believe in:

  • Connecting residents with resources and opportunities to help the environment

  • Increasing public awareness around the amazing work happening in our community

  • Celebrating the environmental actions of our students

  • Fostering collaboration between local groups working on issues relating to the environment and sustainability

OUR HISTORY

The Aquidneck Island Earth Week Committee was formed in 2019. Our goal was to collaborate with environmental organizations, schools, and local governments in Portsmouth, Middletown, and Newport in order to engage in a unified effort to promote sustainability and conservation efforts across the Island. The first Aquidneck Island Earth Week engaged over 600 people in activities ranging from virtual film screenings, socially-distanced clean-ups, to an online showcase of local student’s environmental projects, all in spite of the onset and intensification of the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent stay-at-home orders. The inaugural event was capped off by the announcement of the Greenlove Foundation’s donation of two contactless water filling stations to Newport’s Pell Elementary School and Middletown’s Gaudet Middle school.

F years later, partners are building on this success to grow the AIEW network and offer a wider array of programs and activities. For more on this year’s line-up, please see our events page.
