City Nature Challenge

  • Across Rhode Island! (map)

Whether you’re a seasoned naturalist or just beginning to explore the outdoors, the City Nature Challenge is your chance to get outside, discover local wildlife, and contribute to vital scientific research. Every observation counts—from the smallest wildflower to the most unique fungi. By documenting the species you find, you’ll help local scientists track biodiversity trends and gain a deeper understanding of our shared ecosystems. Come explore with us and see what's growing in our own backyard!

How It Works:

  • Download iNaturalist and create your free account before April 24th

  • Explore and Observe! Take photos with a mobile device or camera of wild plants, animals, or evidence of life (bones, feathers, animal tracks, etc) anytime between April 24th and 27th

    • Attend a community event to participate in the challenge with others!

  • Upload your observations to your iNaturalist account before May 10th, and view them on the Rhode Island project here

  • Explore the City Nature Challenge website to view Global results after May 13th
